Athletic Training Alumna Received Three Scholarships

Karrie Butler, ATC, a 2016 graduate of the ÿ�մ��վ Athletic Training program, has received three post-baccalaureate scholarships.

In addition to the National Athletic Trainers’ Association Gail Weldon Memorial Scholarship, Butler received the Southwest Athletic Trainers’ Association Texas Health Ben Hogan Sports Medicine Graduate Scholarship and the Arkansas Athletic Trainers’ Association Jack Van Schilden Graduate Scholarship.

Butler is working with a football team in Prague, Czechoslovakia this summer (pictured below), and will attend graduate school in Colorado in the fall.

ÿ�մ��վ Alum Saved Life of Security Guard

The Athletic Trainers’ Association of Florida would like to recognize some of their life saving members!

During Summer Physicals at Keiser University in West Palm Beach a security guard collapsed across campus. A student ran to the athletic training room to alert the Athletic Training Staff of ÿ�մ��վ alum Richelle Hammock, MS, ATC, LAT, Lindsay Moccia, ATC, LAT, and team physician Anand Panchal, D.O.

They grabbed the AED and ran to the scene. Dr. Panchal and Richelle administered CPR and Lindsay manned the AED, ultimately saving the security guard’s life. The security guard came by to thank them a few weeks later.

ÿ�մ��վ Interior Designer Featured on Designer Spotlight For Work On Greek Village

ÿ�մ��վ alumna Sarah Barnett Barton was recently featured on “Designer Spotlight” for her work on Greek Village sorority houses.

Barton graduated from ÿ�մ��վ with a major in interior design, and works for .

Kristin Lewis Foundation Scholarship Award To Be Hosted At ÿ�մ��վ

The Kristin Lewis Foundation will host the second Vocal Scholarship Award Concert at the University of Central Arkansas on Sunday, May 22, 2016.

The scholarship awards follow a two-day competition on Saturday, May 21 and Sunday, May 22.

The Sunday Finals Concert will be held at 3:00 p.m. in the Reynolds Performance Hall. A reception and awards presentation will follow. This event is free and open to the public.

The semi-finals round will be held in the President’s Home, which houses a newly donated Steinway grand piano, on Saturday from 1:00 p.m. until 4:00 p.m. The President’s Home is located at 140 Donaghey Avenue. This session is closed to the public.

Due to major grants and generous donations from patrons, this year’s scholarship awards will be in excess of $13,000 to support aspiring young vocalists in their musical pursuits.

ÿ�մ��վ vocal students competing for scholarships this year are Veena Akama-Makia, senior vocal performance major, and Juan Garcia, junior vocal music education major.

Contestants this year represent not only vocalists from ÿ�մ��վ, University of Arkansas at Little Rock and Ouachita Baptist University, but also represent classical singers from the Manhattan School of Music, University of Houston, University of Kansas and other universities throughout the country.

ÿ�մ��վ alumna and opera singer Kristin Lewis is the founder of the Kristin Lewis Foundation, an organization dedicated to encouraging talented musicians at all levels of performance. She began her vocal studies at ÿ�մ��վ and is now in the midst of an opera performing career, which has taken her to nearly every major opera house in Europe, including the Vienna Staatsoper, L’Opéra de Paris and the Berlin State Opera.

During the fall of 2016, she will debut the role of Bess in “Porgy and Bess” at La Scala in Milan, Italy.

She will also come back to the U.S. next year to perform with the Arkansas Symphony Orchestra. Lewis will perform in her house debut at Carnegie Hall in Gustav Mahler’s Symphony Number 2, “Resurrection,” with the Israeli Philharmonic Orchestra and Maestro Zubin Mehta as conductor.

ÿ�մ��վ Alum Honored With Rolland J. Van Hattum Award

University of Central Arkansas alum Carol B. Fleming, speech-language pathologist, was recognized Friday, November 13, 2015 at the annual American Speech Language Hearing Foundation’s Founders Breakfast in Denver, Colorado. Carol received the Rolland J. Van Hattum Award for Contributions in the Schools. The award was presented based on her exemplary advocacy efforts and clinical achievements to enhance service delivery in the schools.

Carol frequently contacts legislators to advocate for educational issues impacting students and professionals. She has passed and prevented the passage of legislation that impacts speech-language pathologists in the schools.

In 2008, Carol developed a web-based resource for the speech-language pathologists in her school district. She worked closely with district administration and the webmaster to make this resource accessible for therapists.

In addition to receiving a plaque, Carol was presented a $500 check for the school district. She was recognized Friday night at the American Speech Language Hearing Association’s Honors and Awards Program. At the awards reception she had the honor to meet and visit with Mrs. Annie Glenn, Mr. David Seidler (The King’s Speech), and Eric Weihenmayer (the only blind person to reach the summit of Mt. Everest).

This is the third time Carol has been recognized by the national organization for her outstanding work. In 2012, she was named Fellow of the American Speech Language Hearing Association (ASHA). Fellowship of the Association is one of the highest honors bestowed on a professional. To be awarded Fellow, the nominee must have made outstanding contributions to the discipline of communication sciences and disorders. The key word for this award is “outstanding:” the nominee must truly stand out among one’s peers. The term implies contributions that are significant and would be so regarded within and beyond one’s community or state. While there are thousands of members who fulfill their professional responsibilities competently, only a small percentage have, by virtue of the quality and amount of their contributions, distinguished themselves sufficiently to warrant recognition. Additionally, Carol is the only school-based Fellow in the state of Arkansas.

In 2013, Carol was the first recipient of the ASHA Certificate of Recognition for Outstanding Contributions in Preschool – Grade 12 Education Settings. This award was created by the ASHA Board of Directors in 2012 to recognize school-based speech language pathologists and audiologists who have distinguished achievements and/or contributions in the schools.

Carol has worked at Pulaski Heights Middle School since 1999. She graduated from ÿ�մ��վ in Conway, AR with both her undergraduate and graduate degrees in speech language pathology (BS ’90, MS ’91). She is a member of the ÿ�մ��վ Alumni Association and regularly donates to the Foundation (even donating to assist with the development of the Greek Village, particularly the Sigma Kappa House). She was a member of the Delta Tau chapter of Sigma Kappa (Fall ’86).

She is married to Eric Fleming and has three children: Amber (21) and twins, Josh and Jack (20). Her daughter is a senior at the university studying Communication Sciences and Disorders. Her son Jack attends Lyon College in Batesville.

Carol is very involved with service to her profession/career. She is a member of the ArkSHA BOD as an ex-officio – serving as an advisory member. She is the State Educational Advocacy Leader (SEAL) -serving as a liaison between ArkSHA and ASHA. She serves on many ASHA committees and Boards: PAC Board, Advisory Council, Schools Based Issues Special Interest Group, and State Advocacy Network groups. Carol is also a member of the Arkansas Education Association. She serves as the chair of the Legislative Committee and is the NEA Director for Arkansas -serving on the NEA BOD. She was president of our Association twice – 2005 and 2010. She has also been the president of the Council of State Speech/Hearing Association Presidents (www.csap.org) – a national organization that provides leadership training to state speech/hearing associations.
