Bear Essentials Food Pantry Celebrates Win Over ASU During Food Drive

The ÿ�մ��վ Bear Essentials Food Pantry and the Arkansas State University Food pantry competed in the inaugural “Food Fight” to see which campus could raise more food for its food pantry during #makeastatementweek.

The competition ran from Monday, September 19 through Friday, September 23.

ÿ�մ��վ was announced as the winner with 3,381 foot items collected throughout the week.

Together, the two campuses collected over 6,100 items of food that will go to their collective communities.

Occupational Therapy Department Wraps Up Falls Awareness Week

ÿ�մ��վ’s Occupational Therapy department collaborated with the Physical Therapy and Exercise & Sport Science on a Falls Awareness, Education, and Prevention Emphasis Week in conjunction with the 9th National Falls Awareness Campaign.

The department has been involved since 2012, but this is the first time it has had an inter-professional emphasis.

National Falls Awareness Day was September 22, 2016, and around 140 students in inter-professional teams traveled to facilities in the central Arkansas region (primarily Faulkner, Pulaski, and surrounding counties) where they made presentations about falls, fall risks, and ways to prevent falls.

The demonstrations were interactive with participants engaging in educational sessions, exercises, and activities (occupations) that helped them learn about falls and fall prevention.

Chemistry Professor Earns Third Three-Year Award From National Science Foundation

Professor William Taylor of the department of chemistry recently earned his third three-year award from the National Science Foundation.

The current award ($223,913) “Investigating the Influence of Halogen Ligands on the Ability of Late Gas-Phase Transition Metal Ions to Activate Bonds in Small Substrate Molecules” supports his work from 2016 – 2019.

With this support, Taylor continues his investigations of fundamental reaction dynamics of metal ions with selected molecules. His work will inform the understanding of chemistry relevant to a number of areas – including atmospheric reactions of greenhouse gases and ozone depleting substances, industrial catalytic processes, and the development of novel metal-based materials.

This support also enables Taylor to continue to provide cutting-edge research experiences for many ÿ�մ��վ STEM majors who have benefited greatly from his careful mentorship during his 26+ year tenure at ÿ�մ��վ.

ÿ�մ��վ Kicks Off First2Go Awareness Campaign Week

The First2Go Awareness Campaign is a campus-wide event that seeks to raise awareness of the challenges faced by first-generation college students, as well as highlight resources available to our first generation students.

Faculty and staff are invited to show their support by wearing their First2Go button, and by sharing their own success stories.

A schedule of events as well as resources and short videos from ÿ�մ��վ First Gen community members will be available online during the awareness campaign.

First2Go Awareness is sponsored by the Office of Student Success, University College, Learning Communities, Student Services, the Office of Diversity and Community, Housing & Residence Life, and the Academic Advising Center.

Math Graduate Teaching Assistants Orientation Comes to Close

A two-day Math Graduate Teaching Assistants (GTA) Orientation was organized and conducted by Dr. Charles Watson, associate professor of mathematics and math GTA supervisor on August 11th and 12th, 2016.

The Department of Mathematics has thirteen GTAs for the AY 2015-16, out of whom 11 are pursuing the M.S. Degree in Applied Mathematics. The others are in the M.A. Mathematics Education.

There are seven new GTAs who have joined the department this fall and the others are in their second year.

Several topics including lesson planning and assessing student progress, teaching resources, integrating technology and software in the classroom, were discussed.

Director of Professional Development Charlotte Strickland gave a one-hour presentation on sexual harassment training during the orientation.

Chair of the Math Department Dr. Ramesh Garimella and Interim Graduate Dean Dr. Joan Simon welcomed the students.

Each GTA in the program receives a 9-month stipend of $10,800 and a tuition scholarship of 9 credit hours per semester for the academic year. Inquiries about the graduate programs in mathematics or financial assistance may be sent to rameshg@uca.edu.
